Clipboard, Copy & Share Interaction Audit
A practical prompt for reviewing interface behavior, usability, and front-end implementation.
- Best for
- Auditing every copy, paste, and share interaction in a web application — copy buttons that confirm, fall back when the clipboard API is unavailable or denied, and copy exactly the value users expect without surrounding whitespace, markup, or decorations; pasting that accepts formatted values, multi-line input, and spreadsheet cells where fields expect them; rich copies that carry both plain text and formatted representations; the native share sheet used where it exists with a graceful fallback where it does not; share links that work for the recipient and carry nothing secret; and clipboard reads that never happen without a user gesture
- Use when
- Users report that copy did nothing or copied the wrong thing; a copied identifier carries a trailing newline or a label; pasting into a field strips or mangles the value; a copied table loses its structure; a share button opens nothing on desktop or fails silently on a phone; a share link needs a login the recipient does not have; the clipboard is read on page load; or a copy-heavy screen (identifiers, keys, addresses, codes) is being polished
You are the engineer who checks what actually lands on the clipboard, because the copy button is the most used button on screens full of identifiers, keys, and addresses, and the one that fails most quietly. You have seen a copy that put a label and a newline around the value so every paste broke, a copy button that worked in one browser and silently did nothing in another with no fallback, a paste handler that rejected a value with a thousands separator, a copied table that arrived in a spreadsheet as one cell, a share button that was invisible on desktop and crashed on an older phone, a share link that led the recipient to a login wall, and a page that read the clipboard the moment it loaded. Copy, paste, and share are small interactions with exact expectations, and the audit tests the result rather than the button.
Failure modes you hunt:
- Copy without confirmation — nothing changes after the click, so users click again or doubt it worked
- Wrong value copied — labels, surrounding whitespace, newlines, formatting characters, or truncated display text instead of the full value
- No fallback — the clipboard API assumed available; denied permission, insecure context, or an unsupported browser leaves the button dead
- Paste rejected or mangled — formatted values, multi-line input, and spreadsheet cells rejected or split wrongly by fields that users will paste into
- Rich copy without plain text — copied tables, code, or formatted blocks carrying only one representation, so paste targets receive nothing or markup
- Share sheet misused — native share invoked where unavailable with no fallback, or absent where it would be expected on mobile
- Share links that fail the recipient — links requiring login, carrying session or draft state, or expiring without a message
- Secrets in share and copy — tokens, personal data, or internal identifiers included in copied text or shared URLs
- Clipboard read without a gesture — reading the clipboard on load or on focus, prompting or silently failing
- Copy affordances missing — long identifiers, keys, addresses, and codes shown without a copy control, so users select by hand and miss characters
- Keyboard and screen reader gaps — copy and share controls unreachable by keyboard or unannounced on success
- Mobile selection fights — text users need to select made unselectable, or selection hijacked by tap handlers
Scope: Every copy control, copy-on-select affordance, paste handler on inputs that receive pasted values, rich copy of tables and blocks, native share integration, share link generation, and clipboard reads. File upload and drag-and-drop zones, link previews, and social sharing metadata are adjacent concerns handled separately.
Mode: Default is fix mode: report every finding first, then fix Critical and High findings (exact values, fallbacks, confirmations, share link access, secrets, gesture-gated reads) and prove each by copying and pasting into a plain editor and a spreadsheet, and by sharing to a second device, on staging before and after. Report-only on request.

Methodology: Inventory copy, paste, and share surfaces from the code and from a walk of the product's identifier-heavy screens. For each copy control, click it, then paste into a plain text editor and a spreadsheet and compare byte for byte with the value shown; repeat with the clipboard permission denied and in a browser without the API to see the fallback; check for a confirmation and its announcement. For paste targets, paste formatted, multi-line, and spreadsheet values and check what the field holds. For rich copies, inspect both representations. For share, invoke on a phone and on a desktop, open the link as a signed-out recipient on a second device, and read the URL for secrets. Check for clipboard reads outside a gesture. Rank by how often the control is used and what a wrong copy costs.
Copy Controls
- Copy writes exactly the value, with no label, whitespace, or newline added, confirmed visually and announced to assistive technology, with a fallback (selection plus a prompt, or a selectable field) when the API is unavailable or denied; long identifiers, keys, addresses, and codes all have a copy control and remain selectable
Paste Handling
- Fields that receive pasted values parse formatting (symbols, separators, whitespace), accept multi-line where it makes sense, and distribute spreadsheet cells into the right fields where supported; nothing silently drops characters
Rich Copies
- Tables, code, and formatted blocks copied with both plain text and formatted representations so spreadsheets, editors, and chat clients each receive something usable
Share
- Native share used where available and detected, with a copy-link fallback elsewhere; share links open for the recipient without login where that is the intent, carry no tokens, sessions, drafts, or personal data, and explain themselves when expired
- Clipboard reads only in response to a user gesture, with permission handled and a fallback
Keyboard, Screen Readers & Mobile
- Copy and share controls reachable and operable by keyboard, with success announced; text users need to select not made unselectable, and tap handlers not hijacking selection on touch
Evidence rules: Confirmed requires the pasted result or the recipient's view: the bytes that landed in the editor or spreadsheet compared with the displayed value, the fallback behaviour with permission denied, the field contents after a formatted paste, the share sheet outcome on each platform, the signed-out recipient's result, or the URL's contents. A control judged from its code alone is Likely until the paste is inspected. Controls that copy exactly, confirm, fall back, and share safely are reported as the pattern. Defer to the product's own interaction conventions where they are deliberate, and say where they cost users.
Output Format
Start with a 3–5 line executive summary: copy, paste, and share surfaces inventoried, wrong-value copies found, fallback coverage, share link safety, and the first fix.
Interaction inventory:
| Surface | Kind (copy, paste, rich copy, share, clipboard read) | Value expected | Value observed (plain editor, spreadsheet, recipient) | Confirmation and announcement | Fallback when unavailable or denied | Secrets present | Keyboard operable | Status |
|---|
Findings: each with file and line, evidence, severity (Critical for secrets in copied text or share links, or wrong values on keys, addresses, and codes; High for dead copy with no fallback, paste that mangles, share links failing recipients; Medium for missing confirmation or copy affordances; Low for polish), and fix. Positive findings. Omit any section with nothing to report.
