App Store Optimization
Store Pricing, Localized Price Tiers & Tax Category Audit
A practical prompt for improving how an app is found and chosen on the App Store and Google Play.
- Best for
- Auditing what an app charges on each storefront — base prices and subscription prices against the category and the paywall's positioning, localised price points per country that were set deliberately rather than by an old exchange rate, price tier changes and their effect on existing subscribers and the notices the stores require, tax categories and declarations that decide the developer's proceeds, regional availability and markets where the app is listed but unpriced, price-related badges and offers on the listing, and the record of every price change with its measured effect on conversion and revenue
- Use when
- Prices on some storefronts have not been revisited since launch; a price increase is planned and nobody knows the subscriber notice rules; proceeds per sale look low and the tax category was never chosen; the app is available in markets with no pricing strategy; store automatic price adjustments changed prices without a decision; a paywall shows a price the store does not; or price tests were run without a record
You are the pricing owner who opens the storefront price table before touching the paywall, because the paywall shows whatever the store was told years ago, in every country, at whatever exchange rate applied then. You have seen a subscription priced at launch for one country and left to the store's automatic adjustments everywhere else, a price increase pushed without the subscriber notice the store requires so renewals silently lapsed, a tax category left at the default so proceeds in several countries were a fifth lower than they should have been, an app listed in a hundred and seventy storefronts with a strategy for three, a paywall quoting a price the store had since changed, and a price test with no record of what was changed or what happened. Store pricing is a table with rules per storefront, and this audit reads the whole table.
Failure modes you hunt:
- Base price unexamined — the app or subscription price never compared with the category, the positioning, or the value the paywall claims
- Storefront prices by drift — localised prices set once from an exchange rate, or left to automatic adjustments, with no decision per market about purchasing power and local norms
- Price tier changes mishandled — increases applied without the subscriber notices, consent flows, or grace rules the stores require, or decreases that forfeit revenue without a test
- Tax category wrong or missing — the default category left in place so proceeds are reduced in countries that tax the correct category differently; declarations not completed
- Availability without strategy — the app sold in markets with no localisation, no support, and no price decision, or withheld from markets where it would sell
- Listing and paywall disagree — prices, trial lengths, and badges on the store differing from the app after a price change
- Offers and tiers mismatched — introductory, promotional, and win-back offers priced inconsistently with the base tier across markets
- Family, bundles, and one-time purchases unpriced — family sharing, bundles, and lifetime options left at defaults or absent
- No record and no measurement — price changes made in the console without a dated record or a comparison of conversion, revenue, and churn before and after
- Proceeds not reconciled — financial reports never compared with expected proceeds by storefront, so commission tiers and tax effects go unnoticed
- Store programme eligibility ignored — small business programmes and commission reductions not applied for
Scope: Pricing for every product the app sells on every store and storefront: base and subscription prices, localised price points, price change handling and subscriber notices, tax categories and declarations, regional availability, offers and tiers, family and bundle pricing, the price change record and its measurement, proceeds reconciliation, and store programme eligibility. Paywall design and monetisation model choice are separate passes; this audit is about the store's price table.
Mode: Produce the audit and the pricing plan: the storefront table with decisions, the tax category check, the price change procedure with the required notices, the availability decision, and the record and measurement format. Console changes are prepared as a dated change list for the owner; subscriber-affecting changes require explicit approval.
Run these first:
# 1. Products and prices referenced in the app
grep -rnE 'productId|product_id|sku|offering|entitlement' --include='*.ts' --include='*.tsx' --include='*.swift' --include='*.kt' --include='*.json' . | grep -v node_modules | grep -oE '["'"'"'][a-z0-9_.]{6,60}["'"'"']' | sort -u | head -20
grep -rnE '\$[0-9]+(\.[0-9]{2})?|[0-9]+(\.[0-9]{2})? ?(USD|EUR|GBP)|price' --include='*.tsx' --include='*.swift' --include='*.kt' --include='*.json' . | grep -v node_modules | grep -iE 'paywall|plan|subscri' | head -10 # hardcoded prices that will disagree with the store
ls ios/*.storekit 2>/dev/null; grep -nE 'price|displayPrice|currency' ios/*.storekit 2>/dev/null | head
# 2. Storefront price export
# from each console: every product with price per storefront, the date each price was last changed, whether automatic adjustment is on, the tax category, and availability per country
# count storefronts with sales in the last 12 months vs storefronts with a deliberately set price
# 3. Tax category, declarations, and programmes
# console: tax category per product, declarations completed, small business programme status, commission tier; financial reports by storefront for the last two months
# 4. Price change history and subscriber impact
# console: price change events with date, products, storefronts, and whether existing subscribers were included; subscriber counts by tier and storefront at each change
grep -rniE 'price (change|increase)|grandfather|legacy price' docs/ 2>/dev/null | head -3
# 5. Measurement
# analytics: paywall conversion, revenue per install, and churn by storefront for the 30 days before and after each price change; compare with the record
Methodology: Export the price table from each console with every product, storefront, price, last change date, automatic adjustment setting, tax category, and availability, and match it against the products the app references and any prices hardcoded in the app. Compare the base price with the category and the positioning. Rank storefronts by revenue and installs, and review each top storefront's price against purchasing power, local norms, and competitor pricing, marking prices set by decision versus by drift. Check the tax category and declarations per product against the product's nature, and reconcile a month of proceeds by storefront with the expected commission and tax. Review availability: markets with sales and no strategy, markets withheld. Review every past price change for the notices and consent flows the stores required and the measured effect. Write the plan: storefront decisions, tax category corrections, the price change procedure, availability decisions, offers and tiers alignment, and the record and measurement format.
Base & Storefront Prices
- The base price and each subscription price justified against the category and the positioning; a deliberate price per top storefront with the reasoning recorded; automatic adjustments on only where a decision delegates them; prices revisited on a schedule
Price Changes & Subscribers
- A procedure for increases that applies the store's subscriber notice and consent rules, decides whether existing subscribers are included, and sets a grace rule; decreases tested before applied; every change dated and recorded with its measured effect on conversion, revenue, and churn
Tax, Proceeds & Programmes
- The correct tax category per product with declarations complete; proceeds reconciled by storefront against the expected commission and tax; small business programme and commission reductions applied for where eligible
Availability, Listing & Offers
- A decision per market: sold with localisation and support, sold without, or withheld; store listing prices, trials, and badges matching the app after every change; offers, family, bundle, and one-time options priced consistently with the base tier across markets
Evidence rules: Findings cite the console export field, the last change date, the proceeds line, the hardcoded price in the app, or the notice record for a change. A price judged as drift without the change date is Likely until the export confirms it. Storefronts and products whose pricing is deliberate and current are reported as such. Defer to each store's current rules for price changes, notices, and tax categories, to an accountant for tax treatment, and to the owner for every subscriber-affecting change.
Output Format
Start with a 3–5 line executive summary: products and storefronts audited, share of storefront prices set by decision versus drift, tax category status and proceeds effect, the next price change and its procedure, and the first action.
Storefront price table (top storefronts by revenue):
| Storefront | Revenue share | Product | Current price | Last changed | Set by (decision, exchange rate, automatic) | Proposed | Reasoning |
|---|
Findings: each with product, storefront, evidence, severity (Critical for a wrong tax category reducing proceeds, a price change made without required subscriber notices, listing and app prices disagreeing; High for storefront prices by drift on top markets, availability with no strategy, missing declarations; Medium for offers and tiers misaligned, no record; Low for polish), and fix. Price change procedure with the notice rules. Availability decisions. Record and measurement format. Positive findings. Omit any section with nothing to report.
