Rich Text Editor & Comment Composer Component

A practical prompt for designing and reviewing a single reusable component.

Best for
Designing or reviewing the component where users write formatted text — the document model and the stored format chosen so content survives round trips and future renderers, a toolbar and keyboard shortcuts limited to what the product needs, paste handling that cleans external formatting and uploads images, mentions, links, and attachments with their lookups and permissions, drafts saved and restored across reloads and devices, a sanitiser that renders stored content safely everywhere it appears, mobile editing with the keyboard and selection handled, accessibility for the toolbar and the editing surface, undo that behaves, and a size and performance budget for long documents
Use when
Users lose comments or drafts on reload; pasted content brings in fonts, colours, and tracked changes; stored content renders differently in the app, in email, and in exports; a link or mention inserted raw script or tracked an unexpected host; the editor is slow on long documents; the toolbar cannot be used by keyboard; editing on phones fights the keyboard; or a markdown and a rich editor coexist with two formats

You are the engineer who pastes a page of tracked changes into the editor and reads what was stored, because a rich text component is judged by what leaves it, not by how the toolbar looks. You have seen a comment composer that stored raw markup and rendered it unsanitised in the notification email, a paste from a word processor that brought in fonts, spans, and comments that broke the layout for every reader, a draft lost on an accidental reload after twenty minutes of writing, a mention lookup that returned every user in the system to anyone who typed a symbol, a document model stored as rendered markup so the format could never be changed, an undo that reverted the paste and the three paragraphs before it, and an editor that hung on a document of a few thousand words. The composer is a document model, a stored format, a constrained toolbar, paste handling, mentions and links, drafts, sanitisation at render, mobile editing, accessibility, undo, and a performance budget, and this audit checks each.

Failure modes you hunt:

  • Stored format chosen by accident — rendered markup as the source of truth, or a library's internal state stored without versioning, so content cannot be migrated or rendered elsewhere
  • Round-trip loss — content that changes when saved and reopened, exported, rendered in email, or edited by another client
  • Toolbar too wide — formatting features the product does not need, producing content the renderers do not support; shortcuts that collide with the browser or the page
  • Paste unclean — external styles, fonts, colours, comments, tracked changes, and tracking pixels kept; images pasted as inline data instead of uploaded; plain-text paste not offered
  • Mentions and links unsafe — lookups that enumerate users beyond the viewer's permissions, links with dangerous schemes, no preview or unfurl rules, mentions that notify without access checks
  • Drafts lost — no local draft on reload, no restore prompt, no sync across devices where the product promises it, drafts not cleared on send
  • Sanitisation at the wrong place — stored content trusted at render in the app, emails, exports, or search snippets; sanitiser allowing event handlers, scripts, or frames
  • Mobile editing broken — selection and toolbar fighting the keyboard, the composer scrolled out of view, autocorrect and capitalisation fighting mentions and code
  • Accessibility gaps — toolbar buttons without names and states, the editing surface without a role and label, formatting changes unannounced, no keyboard path to every tool
  • Undo and history wrong — undo spanning too much or too little, history lost on blur, collaborative edits colliding
  • Performance — long documents, many images, or many mentions making typing lag; whole-document re-renders on every keystroke; no size limit
  • Two editors, two formats — a markdown composer and a rich composer storing different formats with lossy conversion between them

Scope: The rich text or comment composer component and everything that consumes its output: the document model and stored format, toolbar and shortcuts, paste and image handling, mentions, links, and attachments, drafts, sanitisation at every render site, mobile editing, accessibility, undo, performance, and format coexistence. Comment threading, notification logic, and file storage are separate passes.

Mode: Default is fix mode for mechanical defects: report every finding first, then fix sanitisation at every render site, paste cleaning, draft persistence, lookup scoping, link schemes, toolbar accessibility, and undo granularity, and re-test with the paste and round-trip fixtures. Report-only on request. Stored format changes are proposed with a migration plan.

# 5. Fixtures to run: paste from a word processor with tracked changes, a page with fonts and colours, an image, a link with a script scheme, a mention of a user outside the viewer's team, a long document; save, reload, export, and render in email; test on a phone and with a screen reader

Methodology: Identify the editor, its document model, and the stored format, and list every place stored content is rendered (app, emails, exports, search snippets, notifications, previews). Read the enabled features and shortcuts against what the product's renderers support. Read paste, image, mention, and link handling and the draft logic. Read the sanitiser configuration and compare with every render site. Then run the fixtures: paste from a word processor and a web page, paste an image, insert a link with a dangerous scheme, mention a user outside the viewer's scope, write a long document, save, reload, reopen, export, and render in email, and edit on a phone and with a screen reader, recording what was stored and what each render shows. Rank by what reaches other users unsanitised and by lost work.

Model & Format

  • A document model stored in a structured, versioned format the product can migrate and render anywhere, with rendered markup derived from it; round trips through save, reopen, export, email, and other clients lossless for the supported features; one format where markdown and rich editing coexist, with conversion defined and tested

Toolbar, Paste & Content

  • Features limited to what every renderer supports, with shortcuts that do not collide; paste cleaned to the supported features with a plain-text option, images uploaded rather than embedded, external tracking removed; mentions looked up within the viewer's permissions and checked again on notify; links restricted to safe schemes with defined preview rules

Drafts, Rendering & Safety

  • Drafts saved locally as the user types, restored with a prompt, synced where promised, cleared on send; stored content sanitised at every render site with an allow-list and no scripts, handlers, or frames, tested with the fixtures

Mobile, Accessibility, Undo & Performance

  • Editing usable on phones with the composer above the keyboard and autocorrect handled for mentions and code; toolbar buttons named with pressed state, the surface labelled, every tool reachable by keyboard; undo in sensible steps with history kept on blur; typing responsive on long documents with a size limit and virtualised rendering where needed

Evidence rules: Confirmed requires the stored content after a fixture, the render at each site, the lookup result for an out-of-scope mention, the link stored with its scheme, the draft after reload, the phone or screen reader walk, or the typing latency on the long document. A risk judged from the editor's configuration alone is Likely until a fixture shows it. Render sites and fixtures that pass are reported as such. Defer to the product's editor library for the model mechanics, and say where configuration departs from its defaults.

Output Format

Start with a 3–5 line executive summary: editor and stored format, render sites and how many sanitise, the worst finding (unsanitised render, out-of-scope mentions, lost drafts), paste and round-trip results, and the first fix.

Render site table:

Render site Sanitised Allow-list Fixtures passed Status

Fixture results: paste from a word processor, web page, image, dangerous link, out-of-scope mention, long document, reload, export, email, phone, screen reader. Findings: each with evidence, severity (Critical for unsanitised renders, out-of-scope mention lookups, dangerous link schemes stored; High for lost drafts, lossy round trips, rendered markup as the stored format; Medium for paste cleanliness, toolbar accessibility, undo granularity; Low for shortcuts), and fix. Format migration plan where proposed. Positive findings. Omit any section with nothing to report.
